Something that I normally like to do at band camp but like I mentioned in rehearsal, we will do it now...
As an ensemble, all members...whether wind, percussion, or guard member all contribute to make a product that will if done properly will elicit an emotional response from the audience. To get to that point where we are emotionally engaging our audience we must set goals that we want to see accomplished. As a staff we have been planning the best way to help you to be succesful for this marching season since the end of last year. Now that you have "taken the field" it is time to talk about what you personally want to see this ensemble accomplish.
Your assignment. Note that this is slightly changed from what we discussed at rehearsal today. I would like you to come up with THREE GOALS you have PERSONALLY (not what you want the program to do, but what you want to accomplish either musically, or visually, in case of the guard). In addition, I would like you to also write THREE GOALS you have for the program as a whole (write FOUR if you have to say make states).
Be sure to include your name and instrument at the top of the post.
One below average rehearsal will not ruin a season. You should be upset with yourselves though with how today went. What will ruin a season is if you don't learn from mistakes made from below average rehearsals and you allow them to become your standard norm.
Think about it, how many bands ask there students to set goals?!?! No one. This is your band, and being thus you need to take an active role in the direction it takes. Even a below average rehearsal can still become a positive learning experience. Please come prepared to challenge and push your staff as we go into Thursday's rehearsal. I promise you that we will make amazing progress, but only if we are all on the same page.
That said, you know what page your staff is on...and our ultimate goal is to place 5th at states (I secretly hold up 4th behind everyones back). Really, as Mr. P said, there is NO ONE to stop you. There honestly no reason why you couln't take 1st (yes, I just said 1st). We will give you the tools...you must choose to use them.
See you all on Thursday, ready and prepared to work. Practice. That is all.

Janet- Clarinet haha
Alright alright.. looks like im gonna be the little loser that actually listens to jason and does his assignments.
I actually don't think its all that dumb and pointless because its only going to take me like 10 minutes. ALRIGHT lets begin...
hmm, for myself I plan on actually knowing every note of my music, unlike last year I knew it all, I just kinda slacked at it. Number twoooo... i dont like looking up to watch drum major i just want to stare at the judges box.. bad habit i know.. does habit have 1 or 2 Bs? right anyway i just usally use my periferal vision but yes i guess i'll fix that. Numero Tres.. I've kinda stayed somewhat hush hush when I need to, but only when it seems like instructors start getting upset, yeah badddd idea.. Hence this assignment.
I cant believe i'm actually doing this. ----- OK band.. pshh who wants to only get 5th? why aren't we striving for 1st in states yeah thats kinda weird. --- Alright yeah our ediquite (sp?) god i suck at spelling. I think we should keep hush hush most of the time only because its wasting our time. This whole talking every freakin minute idk just doesn't really seem awesome. I LOVE TALKING you all know that.. but i mean i can shut up too. I'm sorry if this is upsetting you. The quieter we are.. The faster we get through sets.. The faster we get break.. The faster we learn our shizz. ---- Listening. Yeahhh listening to our ALRIGHT instructors.. hah justtt kidding. they're pretty awesome. I mean they dont talk for their health, yeah i just stole that quote from someone. But its true they are trying to help us, thats why they're there. since i mentioned states i have to do 4 wooo--- hmm what to say.. OH RIGHT yeah have fun? because last year we had a bunch of fun. I'm sure we're having fun now but lets "be a family" The funner things are the better. No joke. If your hating marching band, why are you in it? Mhmm.
Yay. i did my homework. now i hopee im not the only LOSER that does it. I like talking but thats what MYSPACE is for. So lets just leave it to that.
JANET IS WAY WAY WAY WAY AWESOME

Devin Trumpet
I'd like to see myself become a more mature/professional player and at the same time learn how to handle the multiple responsibilities i have been handed this year and take the program more seriously than i have in previous years
The Band should work on their etiquette during rehearsal, and overall I wish for everyone to become a better marcher and player because from listening and looking at my first rehearsal back it kind of shook me of how weird it is coming from a corps to this also I hope for us to become more of like a family like we did our freshman year even though we were bad we were close
oh and let's make like 3rd or something this year why not it'd be cool to finally go to finals
i guess that's it

Hey its Philip, I play Alto Sax I have 3 personal goals, They are: 1. I would like to be able to play my music as well or even better as some of the vets. 2. As my first year in marching band I would like to be one of the better freshmen, showing proper technique, ettiquet, and musicianship. 3. I would like to by the end of this year to be able to march very well. My 3 goals I have for the program are: 1. I would like our rehersals to be more productive, without all the chit-chat, and playing when not to. 2. (This one aimed towards Sax's) I would like my section to rise up and set an example to the other sections. 3.I would like for people in the band to participate in fund raising activities more often. Ohh Yea, I want us to place 5th (or 4th "Fingerssss") in states. End. Wait!!!! If you wanna see the best video, Go Here!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtKnzhUw9qM ;D

Katie- Flute/assistant Drum Major Okay, personally, I definately want to improve my pattern, step off of the field after every performance and not remember my show (vets should know what I'm talking about), and earn the band's respect as a leader. As for the band: I would like all of us to share the same level of dedication and energy as our staff because they obviously think we are capable of amazing things, so maybe if we are as motivated as they are, we can make that happen. I would also like the band to find "the zone", so to speak, to become more disciplined and focused (not moving at attention, talking during rehearsal, etc.) so as to improve all of those marching/playing issues. Of course, I WANT TO MAKE STATES!!!! and finally, I want to get the rest of the band involved in stuff like this and not disregard stuff that can make us better.

OK
Cody- Le tuba
Well first off i want to improve the etiquette, like devin said, of myself at practice.(Im getting better...........yea not really but whatever.) Second I don't wanna screw up this section leader even though it's of "technically" 1 person(although i got the bari saxs as well) I just want us to blow around to chinatown. Third, I want the judges to say on the tape that BOTH the tuba player need to back it off. I emphasize both in that sentence quite strongly.
As for the program, Now we get to the fun part!!
1.) Dynamics!!!!! Why the heck do you think i play so loud!!! 2.) Underclassmen(If you are below the person in year) should always listen to there vets. Because i'd say 90% of what they are saying is right.(Found that out last year) 3.) Care about your band program! Be proud about being a marching cougar! If anybody has or had a class with me knows that if someone is bad mouthing the program even in the case of them not being in it i stick up for my program 110%. Even in the case if I had to get in a fight. Heck, I'd do it!
Last thing I have to say is that people need to practice their music. I am guilty of this. I hardly ever practice my music. Maybe once a month if i'm lucky. And i'll admit to that. I really need to practice more.
P.S Brass Rules!

Shelby Hanna- Clarinet
Well Yeah lets see...
Personal Goals for myself- 1- To get all my music memorized completely and not leave any parts of the music blank. 2- Be able to play all the way through the music while putting and marching it together. (not jsut standing in place) 3- Be patient with my fellow class mates.
Group Goals- 1- More respect for the Officers. 2- Practice ettiqet (spelling- sorry) meaning running back to sets and no talking while on the field. 3- The officers and section leaders need to step it up on the field. 4- Be a family and show it!!!!
Well that's all for me I hope everyone does this assignment and I hope myself and the band can acccomplish all these goals this year and get 5th place at finals...

Alex- tenor sax 3 goals to improve myself: I'd like to see myself improve musically by having all the songs memorized. I'd like to have my sets cleaner and improve my technique. I want to push myself harder this year too. 3 goals to improve the band as a whole: I think everyone should work as a team and family to get anything accomplished. I want our practices to be more productive. Everyone should be as dedicated and disciplined as the next person. We are only as great as our weakest player which youve probably heard before. If everyone sticks to their goals I think 5th place is more possible than we think.

Sarah...teh Baritone
my personal goals may not be a big deal to some, but they are very important to me. They're nothing spectacular, but my expectations of the band as a whole are quite a bit higher. Strength in numbers and everything...
[glow=pink,2,300]NUMBER 1:[/glow] yea...i want to be able to run that freaking lap before rehearsal. [glow=Pink]NUMERO 2:[/glow] I would like to know the stand songs just as well as i know the show music. It's all important you know. [glow=pink,2,300]3RD NUMBER:[/glow] Be "that Senior" that I looked up to when I was a wee Freshman.
GOALS FOR US-ALL:
[glow=red,2,300]1![/glow] mmmk...so usually trophies don't mean to world to me, I just really strive to seriously enjoy what I'm doing. But, this being my last year in our lovely band, I would ADORE making it to finals this year. that would be cool... [glow=red,2,300]2!![/glow] I would like to ensure our bands future by helping the underclassman become more knowledgeable about music and marching then they should be at this point in their lives. [glow=red,2,300]3!!![/glow] Take this music and work it to it's full potential. I love our music, guys. I was so excited for this year. Let's try and make it awesome.
aaand I'm done.

Steve "Manwich": Snare drum Personal goals- 1)Get to know everyone(mostly freshman)in the program. 2)Build chops and learn new rudiments that will help my growth in drumming. 3)Learn the finer points of marching, such as proper technique to subdivide at fast tempos and jazz crabbing. 4)Win best percussion at at least 3 competitions......and of course States Band goals-1)To not move AT ALL when called at set, it shows great discipline. It bothers me to see how many people move around at attention(especially those with lighter instruments). 2)To feel the energy from everyone after having an amazing show and just knowing that we gave it everything we could. First football game my sophmore year it started to pour at the start of the show and we marched it anyway. That was the most fun I've ever had on the field and I want us to top that feeling this year. 3)To not have anyone be any less excited to be in this program than the rest of us. People like that really bring the moral of the band down, so it would be great to have everyone give the program as much of their dedication as a person can give. Oh yeah me+bloobies= ;D

Lobster -Tenor Sax (the best instrument on the face of the planet, hands down) I am a little p/off cause this thing just erased my entire entry before I could post it, so Ill sum everything up.
Personal Goals 1. Memorize all the music, every note and run, perfectly. 2. Get along with my section and show more respect for any person with a rank in the band, so as to make things easier on everyone. 3. Perfect my marching technique and presentation so that I dont suck and get pointed out for it. 4. Have fun with this show and program because its my senior year.
Program Goals 1. Show Freshman/new people how to march, play and be a part of this band so they can do the same to future newbies. 2. Fundraise, make states(higher than 5th) and have more productive rehearsals. 3. Listen to staff and drum majors and remember what they say the next day instead of letting it fly through your head for one second.
I know I dont exactly do what I said above, yet, but I am going to.
